July 28, 2021

In this week's Simon Family JCC newsletter... You'll read about an art exhibition unlike any previous here at the Sandler Family Campus; get an update on Camp JCC, which is in full swing; read about the launch of Group Swim lessons (for any age); we have a date for the next Sunday Fun Day; a legendary 9x blackbelt karate master has begun self-defense classes twice-weekly here at the JCC; and how you can bookmark the 2021 Guide to Jewish Living put out by the Jewish News

A Retrospective is Taking Shape...

The vast and varied collection of works on paper, canvas, metal, and clay of Virginia artist Lorraine Fink comprise a major exhibition at the Leon Family Gallery and throughout areas of the Simon Family JCC from August 1 to September 30, 2021. LORRAINE FINK RETROSPECTIVE: THEN, NOW, & LOOKING FORWARD is the first retrospective of work by this prolific contemporary artist. Colorful paintings inspired by her round-the-world travels, and sculptures from found objects — including light fixtures procured right here at the JCC — can be found throughout our second floor gallery, as well as in hallways and public spaces.  Mark your calendar to join the artist for a reception on Sunday, September 12 from 1 pm to 3 pm.

Sunday Fun Day - August 8th

The next family-friendly Sunday Fun Day event is on the books for August 8th  from 2 pm - 5 pm. This event is presented by PJ Library, and brings a wonderful crowd to the Metzger Outdoor aquatics area and pools for a day of sunshine, swimming, and fun. We supply the venue, music, pool toys, and a sweet treat; you bring the sunblock, towels, and your family & friends. This is a great community-building event and way to meet other JCC families as we get back to normal and enjoy a safe, outdoor Sunday. The event is completely free to JCC, Strelitz, and Camp JCC families, as well as our YAD and synagogue friends. Regular guest fees apply. Please register ahead of time at the link below.

Spirit Fighting Arts Offers Self-Defense

Virginia Beach Karate – Spirit Fighting Arts has begun offering all-ages self-defense classes here at the Simon Family JCC on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, from 6 pm – 7 pm. Owner-Instructor Ron Smith is a 9-time blackbelt, who learned Kobayashi-Te, a 2,500 year old method used by Okinawan kingdom guards. Smith, a former California safety police officer, leads the classes for any age group. “You’re never too young or old to learn to defend yourself appropriately,” Smith says. He adds that this isn’t aggressive, strike first-type karate but relevant movements aimed at making you prepared and in good shape to do so. [Separate fees apply; JCC members receive a discount. Call 757.745.9041 to sign up.]

Camp JCC: A Few Openings for Campers

CAMP JCC is in full swing, and counselors / JCC staff are having a blast making sure campers are having a wonderful, well-rounded summer experience. We have a robust program that includes instructional swim and sports activities, creative craft time (tie-dyes were a big hit last week!), and the ever-popular “J-Vibes”—which infuses Jewish learning into our everyday programming. Older groups (rising 6th and 7th graders) have gone off-site to paddle kayaks at First Landing, surfing at the oceanfront, as well as roller skating and Top Golf. They also chose to make dog toys out of recycled garments to deliver to the Virginia Beach SPCA, along with hand-written notes of gratitude. There are still a few open slots for new campers during the last 3 weeks of camp; call Director of Camp Dave Flagler – Dflagler@UJFT.org or call 757.452.3182.

One Fish, Two Fish, Swordfish

Group SWIM LESSONS will begin taking registration on August 1, with lessons beginning promptly thereafter. The demand for private lessons is so that we feel groups may fill up quickly, so if you’re considering, please get your name in early. Group lessons are limited to 5 participants, and swimmers learn at their own pace and advance accordingly. Our expert instructors have deep experience working with all ages. This is also a great way to get your kids accustomed to pool time, and prepared for Summer or Winter Swordfish Swim Team, which is open to kids 5 – 18 years old. Contact swim instructor/coordinator Jacob Gynan: JGynan@SimonFamilyJCC.org or call 757.321.2316.
