August 24, 2021

In this week's Simon Family JCC newsletter... Our Camp JCC Director shares a few thoughts on the summer... we're looking at a few end-of-summer events around our outdoor pool — a family BBQ and an adults-only cocktail gathering... With the winds of fall in the air, we're gearing up for Fall youth sports team... and eyeing Sunday, Sept. 12 as a massive day here at the JCC. Read on to hear more!

Camp JCC is a Wrap for the Summer!

Dave Flagler, our Director of Camp and Teen Engagement, has been gushing at the success of this summer’s Camp JCC. He extends a heartfelt ‘thank you’ and endless gratitude — on behalf of the entire JCC staff and Camp Leadership Team — to the campers that joined us and their families that helped keep our camp environment safe. We also want to spotlight the staff who were instrumental in creating a positive, meaningful, and fun environment throughout challenging circumstances. Dave is also eager to share that there will be engaging children’s classes as well as Camp JCC Fall and Winter programming announced soon. Keep your eyes on the newsletter!

A Social Club for Adults: Sababa

Sababa Social Club is making its debut as an adults-only social event around the pool. From 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm on Wednesday, August 25th, we'll gather over beer, wine, and sangria, some light kosher snacks, and some terrific live music from all-star Lewis McGehee. So after you wrap up that late-summer round of golf or calls at the office, come on over to the JCC for a free evening and help us kick off the inaugural Sababa Social Club event.

End of Summer Shabbat BBQ for Families

This one’s for the whole family... In partnership with PJ Library in Tidewater, and the Federation's Young Adult Division, come celebrate the end of summer on Friday, August 27, with a Shabbat BBQ dinner and activities for both kids and adults. We’ll start with song and Sabbath blessings at 5 pm, and enjoy dinner around the pool at 6 pm. This is a ticketed event (discounts for the whole family) so click the link to reserve your space, as it will fill up. Contact Nofar Trem for questions: NTrem@UJFT.org

Leon Family Gallery: New Show & Artist Reception

You’ve likely noticed the vast and varied collection of works on paper, canvas, metal, and clay of Virginia artist Lorraine Fink that have all but taken over the interior of the Simon Family JCC and Leon Family Gallery. The show, up through September 30, 2021, culminates with an artist’s reception on Sunday, Sept. 12, at 1 pm. Click to RSVP for this free event, and hear from the artist herself how she conceived the colorful paintings and sculptures from found objects inspired by round-the-world travels. For more info, visit www.JewishVA.org/gallery or contact Jill Grossman, JGrossman@UJFT.org

Youth Sports Leagues: Sign Up for Fall

Our athletics department has announced Fall and Winter sports leagues, and these teams may fill up quickly. We’re trying out a 3 - 6-year-old tee ball experience starting Aug. 23rd  going into mid-Oct. Winter Swordfish swim team (ages 5 -18) registration deadline is Nov. 1; Youth Basketball will have a pre-season clinic (K - 5) on Monday afternoons starting in early Nov.; then move into Youth Basketball League beginning with the draft on Nov. 29. We encourage members to sign their kids up, so take a look at the link below. For questions reach out to Athletics Director Tom Edwards TEdwards@UJFT.org

Pickleball Courts Ready to Roll at JCC

As evenings begin to cool down, there's been renewed interest in our pickleball courts and league play. Our athletics director has reassured that if JCC members don't see the nets up on the courts when they arrive to play (we keep them in a court-side storage chest to protect them from the elements), guests are welcome and encouraged to remove them and slip them over the posts for play. Furthermore, as Fall and Winter begin, we have the ability to set up multiple courts in our gymnasium. Call ahead for indoor court setup, but know that our outdoor courts are always open and available for members.
