Tonight: Nobel Author  Discussion - Get Tickets

THURSDAY, NOV 4, 7:30 PM

A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Stockholm: The Adrenaline-Fueled Adventures of an Accidental Scientist is a rollicking memoir from the cardiologist turned legendary scientist and winner of the Nobel Prize that revels in the joy of science and discovery. Known for being a larger-than-life character: a not immodest, often self-deprecating, always entertaining raconteur. In addition to his time as a physician, from being a "yellow beret" in the public health corps with Dr. Anthony Fauci to his time as a cardiologist, and his extraordinary transition to biochemistry, which would lead to his Nobel Prize win, Dr. Lefkowitz has ignited passion and curiosity as a fabled mentor and teacher, and as one of today's leading scientists.

The Memory Monster Author Talk, Monday

MONDAY, NOV. 8, 12:00 PM

Join the Jewish Community Relations Council of the United Jewish Federation of Tidewater, Simon Family JCC, Embassy of Israel & Community Partners' Israel Today series, as part of the UJFT & Simon Family JCC’s Lee and Bernard Jaffe Family Jewish Book Festival for an online conversation with author and attorney Yishai Sarid as he discusses his new book, The Memory Monster.

The Memory Monster confronts difficult questions that are all too relevant to Israel and the world today: How do we honor the memory of horror without being consumed by it? How do we process human brutality? What makes us choose sides in conflict?

Written as a report to the chairman of Yad Vashem, Israel’s Holocaust memorial, our unnamed narrator recounts his own undoing. Hired as a promising young historian, he soon becomes a leading expert on Nazi methods of extermination at concentration camps in Poland and guides tours through the sites for students and visiting dignitaries.

Wed, Nov 10: Film Screening and Discussion with Archeologist Richard Freund

On November 10th, join the Holocaust Commission for an extraordinary film event, as we screen The Good Nazi, at the Simon Family JCC. Stay for a post-film talk by Dr. Richard Freund, forensic archeologist on whose work the film is based. (Freund is the Bertram and Gladys Aaron Professor in Jewish Studies at Christopher Newport University.) A minimal entry fee will support Dr. Freund’s work at CNU, including restorations at many world Jewish Heritage sites. Click the button below to reserve your spot (space is limited) for the screening and discussion here at the Simon Family JCC. Watch the film trailer here.

This presentation is a partnership between the Holocaust Commission of the United Jewish Federation of Tidewater and Christopher Newport University. Prior to the Nov. 10 screening in Virginia Beach, CNU will host a series of educational programs on their campus, including the Virginia Holocaust Museum’s acclaimed Auschwitz exhibit

For the Nov. 7th program—a lecture by Dr. Freund, a performance by the Virginia Children's Chorus, and the world premiere of Brundibar/The Trial of God, based on the play by Elie Wiesel, the Tidewater Jewish Foundation has arranged for a bus to transport community members from the JCC to the CNU campus for the events. There will be no cost to ride the bus, but seating is limited to 45 people.  To reserve your seats call 757-965-6103.

UJFT Blood Drive "For Sam" - Dec. 1st

The United Jewish Federation of Tidewater and the Simon Family JCC are hosting an American Red Cross Blood Drive on Wednesday, December 1, in honor of Sam Sachs. A highly passionate and energetic young man, Sam launched his own team of “Sam’s Warriors” after spending time at Children of the King’s Daughters for T-cell Leukemia treatment. He made it his personal mission to raise funds — and spirits — for children who often times have to go through intense medical treatment on their own. It’s in this spirit that we are hosting a drive to help the Red Cross reach their local and regional goals for blood donations.

You can pre-reserve your donation time at RedCrossBlood.org and enter the Sponsor Code “SAM” (or click below). We will have a safe and spacious experience available in our gymnasium, and the process will be swift! Please reserve your time between 9:30 AM – 2:30 PM on Wednesday Dec. 1. Drop ins are also fine. Share with friends, family, and neighbors. Come donate for a great cause on December 1st!
