Please enjoy the latest happenings from the United Jewish Federation of Tidewater

March 3, 2022

There are an estimated 200,000 Jews living in Ukraine; all have been profoundly impacted by the Russian invasion, which began last week. Our overseas partners are on the ground, supplying direct aid to those in the conflict zones. And it is up to us, the Tidewater community, to help insure those needs are met.

Your gift will go directly to emergency crisis efforts in Ukraine. Give as generously as you can, here:

DEVELOPING CRISIS IN UKRAINE: HOW & WHERE YOUR FUNDS DIRECTLY HELP

Many of you received a message on Tuesday afternoon from our President, Laura Geringer Gross, and Executive Vice President & CEO, Betty Ann Levin, explaining the work done by the UJFT to set up a special Ukraine Emergency Fund 2022, in order to directly assist those in dire need, with immediacy. If you did not receive that message: Along with our overseas partner agencies — JDC, The Jewish Agency for Israel, and World ORT — we’re able to get emergency aid to those on the ground in Ukraine every day of the year, helping the most vulnerable, and supporting programs to help younger generations reimagine Jewish life. With these channels already in place, during this time when emergency relief is essential, we're well positioned to make your donations effective immediately.

Last Saturday, JAFI reported that Jewish Agency Shlichim assisted the first group of new Israeli immigrants to cross into Poland from Ukraine. Your gift will ensure safe passage for many more, as they make Aliyah to Israel.

Below is a button for where you can contribute — as much as you can — and know that it will help in Ukraine's conflict zones as well as those fleeing to keep their families safe throughout the country.

MAGICIAN JOSHUA JAY THIS THURSDAY

MARCH 3, 7:30 PM

There's a saying: The door to magic is closed, but not locked. Joshua Jay's book, How Magicians Think: And Why Magic Matters reveals the mindset behind the magic‚ what it's like to practice an art that so many love yet so few understand. Neither a how-to book nor a how-do-they-do-it exposé, it's written as a series of short, lively essays. A headliner at Hollywood's Magic Castle and former World Champion in Sleight-of-Hand, he consulted on illusions for Game of Thrones.  He will perform magic at the JCC during his March 3rd appearance! This is a family-friendly show; children who can sit through an hour presentation are welcome to attend. (This is an in-person live experience, only. We will not be streaming this event.) For questions contact Hunter Thomas, HThomas@UJFT.org

THE ART OF MODIGLIANI: JEWISH ART EDUCATION, FREE FOR COMMUNITY

WEDNESDAY, MARCH 9, 12 PM

Our next Jewish Art Education course will cover the Art of Modigliani, the early 20th century Sephardic Jewish artist who led a prolific and remarkable life. As with all our JAE courses, thanks to a very generous donor, all courses are free (and include lunch for in-person guests). Courses are taught by art historian Nancy Kotz; those who wish to log in from home can do so, after signup at JewishVA.org/JAE or by clicking the button below.

SUNDAY FUN DAY IS BACK! PURIM FESTIVITIES COMMENCE

Join PJ Library in Tidewater and Camp JCC at the Simon Family JCC on March 13th for a Purim Celebration! Make hamantaschen cookies with friends and family; some to take home, and some to share with Jewish military families in our community. Operation Hamantaschen will have 3 time slots available (1 PM, 2PM and 3 PM), each lasting an hour.

While we wait for our cookies to bake and cool, join PJ Library in Tidewater and Camp JCC in the Zone and gym for a special Purim themed Sunday Fun Day. There will be Purim tunes, games and activities. Kids are welcome to come in costume!

Teens ages 13 and up are invited to help with the event and earn community service hours. Sign up to volunteer here!

Spots are FREE but LIMITED for Operation Hamantaschen, so be sure to register today.

Nadiv Men's Giving Circle, which gathers to educate, socialize, and fundraise for select partners of the United Jewish Federation of Tidewater, is back with their Annual March Madness Bracket Challenge. There's no basketball experience necessary; you follow the steps of the online bracket system and watch (or not!) the tournament to track your progress. The three top selected brackets win great prizes, including a $1,000 Amazon gift card. Funds raised in the past for Nadiv have gone on to support Strelitz International Academy programming, sponsoring youth for Camp JCC, and more.
