Please enjoy the latest happenings from the United Jewish Federation of Tidewater

January 6, 2022

There's still time to help us support the year's programs that embolden Jewish life here in Tidewater, as well as beyond. We accomplish this through donations to the UJFT Annual Campaign, with additional support from other funders & sponsors.

Your gift will insure successful future programming, and a fruitful 2022. Give generously, below:

Start 2022 with Inspiring Melton Courses

This Monday you have the golden opportunity to "sample" one of our amazing Melton School of Adult Learning courses, taught by the venerable Dr. Amy Milligan. "Biblical Women" will delve into the female personalities from the bible—some well known, others less than—and what influenced their decisions and character. This 10-week online course starts Jan. 31, and will take place from the comfort of your home at 6:45 PM every Monday. (Classes are recorded for later viewing, helpful if schedule conflicts arise.) This Monday you can get a "taste" of what the class is like before committing. BONUS: The UJFT is subsidizing a portion of tuition for participants, use offer code "UJFT2022".

On Jan. 25th, Rabbi Michael Panitz's 10-week course, "Jewish Mysticism," also begins. He'll trace the history of Kabbalah, from the mystical beginnings right through Madonna, naturally. This course has the option of in-person (Tuesdays at noon at the Simon Family JCC) or from the comfort of your home, online.

Register for either (or both!) courses at the button below; you can also reach out to SLautman@UJFT.org for questions or more information.

Sending Our Support For Those Affected By The Colorado Wildfires

The United Jewish Federation of Tidewater is offering the opportunity to directly support the Colorado community, who were impacted by the recent wildfires. More than a 1,000 homes and structures burned to the ground. Your donations on the button below go directly to Jewish Colorado, who are distributing funds to those most in need at this time. Give as generously as you can.

Sign up and join this wonderful community of parents and young children.

Society of Professionals Wind Farms Breakfast Program TO BE RESCHEDULED

Out of an abundance of caution, with the prevalence of the Omicron COVID virus in our community, the January 10th SOP program will be rescheduled to a future date, still to be determined.

We look forward to learning more about this Offshore Wind Farm project together and what it will mean for our community.

Hope to see you there!

Paper Midrash and Rae Stern: New Leon Family Gallery Exhibits

The Leon Family Gallery on the Sandler Family Campus has two new exhibits up . Isaac Brynjegard-Bialik's striking "You Did What To My Comics?!?" balances pieces of finely-cut paper with bright color from comic book arrangements. This work is a mashup of contemporary pop culture with stories and traditions of the Jewish people. The artist will be visiting in early February, 2022, to present "Paper Midrash" sermons and workshops along with his wife, Rabbi Shawna Brynjegard-Bialik, as a part of our Tidewater Together series. (Click the button below for a list of events.)

A second exhibit hangs above the Cardo lobby at the Simon Family JCC: Selected works from Rae Stern's Outside Time series, entitled "Hyomnemata, 2019," which is a part of her exhibit at the Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) through March 6. At the JCC, the translucent paper is manipulated by daylight to reveal the images of 5 women. Descriptions of the work — and QR codes to learn more about them — are available in the Cardo to visitors.
