Please enjoy the latest happenings from the United Jewish Federation of Tidewater

December 16, 2021

Our programs and the efforts they support embolden Jewish life here in Tidewater, as well as beyond. None of which would be possible without donations to the UJFT Annual Campaign, with additional support from other funders & sponsors.

Help us "wrap" your gift to our 2022 Annual Campaign, which supports future programs.

Support Tornado Recovery in Kentucky

Following the devastating tornadoes in Kentucky — which has taken lives as well as destroyed homes and infrastructure — the United Jewish Federation of Tidewater is offering the opportunity to directly support this affected community. Donations on the button below go directly to the American Red Cross, on behalf of the Jewish Federation of Louisville, Kentucky. Please give as generously as you can.

Offshore Wind Farms: A Breakfast Discussion with the Society of Professionals

UJFT’s Society of Professionals will host a breakfast program entitled, Why Offshore Wind Farms Matter, January 10, 2022 from 8:00 to 9:30 AM (light breakfast included) on the Sandler Family Campus.

The Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind project will be located 27 miles off the coast of Virginia Beach and will be the largest offshore wind project in the US, once complete in 2026. Learn how the Hampton Roads community is poised to become a leader in science, technology and innovation, by using the power of wind to create renewable energy.

Joel Rubin, Director of WINDSdays Campaign, will moderate a panel discussion with the following experts, who’ve played leading roles in supporting this project: George Hagerman (Senior Project Scientist at Old Dominion University’s Center for Coastal Physical  Oceanography), Fred Pasquine (President, Fairlead Integrated, Ray White (Business Development Coordinator, Virginia Beach Department of Economic Development).

There is no charge to attend this event. For more information or to RSVP, contact Ronnie Jacobs Cohen at RCohen@ujft.org or (757) 321-2341.

Two New Classes, Two Amazing Teachers

Come Sample a "Taste" of Adult Education

We've received some very enthusiastic feedback on our Melton School of Learning programs over the years; yet understand that for some, the idea of committing to multi-week course for adult education is a hard leap to take. So we're offering something new: A "Taste of Melton," which allows you to sample a class, for free, before signing up. These are introductions to the 10-week classes that will begin in mid- to late-January. Following the success of last night's "Jewish Mysticism" Kabbalah "Taste" with professor Rabbi Panitz, we're thrilled to offer room for one coming up. Dr. Amy Milligan will present an intro to "Biblical Women: Emerging from the Margins Through Midrash" on Jan. 10, from 6:45 PM - 8:15 PM. This is an online course, which you fully participate in from the comfort of home. For more information click the button below or contact Sierra Lautman at SLautman@UJFT.org for questions.

Leon Family Gallery: Two New Exhibits

The Leon Family Gallery on the Sandler Family Campus has two brand new exhibits up and ready for viewing. Isaac Brynjegard-Bialik's striking "You Did What To My Comics?!?" balances reassembled pieces of finely-cut paper with bright pops of color from comic book arrangements. This work from the Southern Californian artist is a mashup of contemporary pop culture with stories and traditions of the Jewish people. The artist will be visiting in early February, 2022, to present "Paper Midrash" sermons and workshops along with his wife, Rabbi Shawna Brynjegard-Bialik, as a part of our Tidewater Together series. (More information to follow, here, in January.)

A second exhibit hangs above the Cardo lobby at the Simon Family JCC: Selected works from Rae Stern's Outside Time series, entitled "Hyomnemata, 2019," which is a part of her exhibit at the Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) through March 6. There, Stern shows dozens of porcelain objects that light from within upon touch, exposing hidden lithophanes. At the JCC, the translucent paper is manipulated by daylight to reveal the images of 5 women. Descriptions of the work — and QR codes to learn more about them — are available in the Cardo to visitors.
