Please enjoy the latest happenings from the United Jewish Federation of Tidewater

August 19, 2021

Good afternoon from your United Jewish Federation of Tidewater. Today we're talking about wrapping up Hineni Fellowship applications... The adults-only social club you'll want to be at next week... Plans for a very engaging Super Sunday... A very unique violin chamber performance (with limited tickets available now), and next week's family-friendly summer Shabbat BBQ and pool party. At the bottom of this newsletter you can find a red "HAITI RELIEF" donation button, where we encourage our Federation members to donate.

Sababa Social Club: Don't Miss This

We think it's time for adults to kick back and enjoy a moment of relaxation — you've earned it! The Sababa Social Club was born out of this idea: It's time to chill. Please join us around our pool on Wednesday, August 25th, from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm to meet old and new friends. We'll strengthen our Jewish community over adult beverages, light snacks, and fantastic live music with Lewis McGehee. It's free but you must register. Details at the link/button below.

Lorraine Fink Retrospective: Paintings, sculptures, photos... and a Reception You're Invited To

More than a hundred paintings, sculptures, drawings, and more comprise the most expansive art show we've ever had at our Leon Family Gallery. Open to all through Sept. 30th, you can read more about this amazing show — and an emotional experience when the artist visited the gallery — at the first link below. Click to join us and Lorraine Fink at an artist's reception on Sept. 12th at 1 pm. See firsthand what legacy means to a family that's interconnected with both our Federation, facilities here at the Simon Family JCC, and the national arts world.

Super Sunday is Sept. 12 and We Need You for Making/Taking Calls

As you likely know, our Jewish Federation funds everything from senior health care, to child and adult education, cultural events, national and global emergencies, and way more. The way we do this? Through our annual campaign — which starts now. Super Sunday brings our most enthusiastic and dedicated leaders, lay people, young adults, staff and community together to help make (or take) calls to our hugely generous donor community. It's the day that sets the tone for our entire year of giving and supporting dozens of causes. Please join us at the JCC between 10 am - 1 pm (two caller shifts are available) for a fun event that brings about big results for the Jewish community.

Elie Wiesel Contest Winner to Host Program

August 28, from 3 PM - 5 PM

Interested in learning about the experiences of others who might not be like you? To open hearts and minds, and to help us get to know each other’s stories, teen activist (and winner of the Holocaust Commission’s 2021 Elie Wiesel Competition Linda Belkov Poetry Award) Areen Syed has arranged for teenagers representing different religions, ethnicities, sexual orientations, and abilities to share their stories about how their identity has influenced their journey of growing up. The program will take place at the Slover Library for Pages of Our Lives, on Saturday August 28th from 3-5 pm. This innovative event was organized by Syed in partnership with Together We Remember Youth Action Network.

Violins of Hope Chamber Concert

Wednesday, Oct. 6, 7:30 PM

Join co-sponsors the Holocaust Commission UJFT and the Virginia Arts Festival at this one-night only Hampton Roads appearance of the Violins of Hope! The show will be held at Norfolk Academy. Brought to our community from the Violins of Hope Richmond tour stop, these exquisite instruments that survived the Holocaust and were restored by world-class Israeli luthier Amnon Weinstein — who lost 400 family members in those tragic events. They will only be played once in our area. You can see some of them on display and learn their powerful stories in Richmond through Oct. 24th at our partner museums, the Virginia Holocaust Museum, the Virginia Museum of History & Culture, and the Black History Museum & Cultural Center.
