30TH ANNUAL VIRGINIA FESTIVAL OF JEWISH FILM: GET YOUR TICKETS!

FEBRUARY 23 - MARCH 1

One of the longest-running Jewish film festivals in the country — the Virginia Festival of Jewish Film presented by Alma & Howard Laderberg — is the hot ticket in town this year. The milestone 30th annual festival has already added a second screening (at 5 PM) for the first film, Karaoke (a Tel Aviv love story), showing on Thursday, Feb. 23 at Cinema Cafe Kemps River. 

Seats are still available for the Big Saturday Night Celebration and showing of iMordecai, (starring Judd Hirsch), at Zeiders American Dream Theater, Saturday, Feb. 25 at 7:30 PM.

The Levys of Monticello (the first Jewish commodore to serve in the U.S. Navy) includes a conversation with the film's creative team and Vice-Admiral Herman A. Shelanski, USN (retired). This will show on Sunday, Feb. 26 at 2:30 PM at Norfolk Academy's Johnson Theater. 

On Monday, March 1, at 7:15 PM you can enjoy Next Stop, Greenwich Village (starring a young Christopher Walken and Shelley Winters) at the Naro on Colley Ave. in Norfolk

The Big Saturday Night Celebration of Jewish Film, will feature a champagne and dessert reception with klezmer music by Bagels & Fraylox following the iMordecai screening.

Tickets to iMordecai & the Big Saturday Night Celebration are $25, and individual tickets for all other films are $12.

YOUNG ADULT DIVISION & NADIV KICK OFF MARCH MADNESS FUNDRAISER

Nadiv, the young men’s giving circle of the UJFT’s Young Adult Division (YAD), is hosting its annual bracket challenge fundraiser during the 2023 Men’s March Madness Tournament.

Purchase brackets ($10 each) online now, and on Sunday, March 12, (when the NCAA releases its 68-team bracket) a link will be automatically sent. If you purchase a bracket after March 12, you will receive a link to access the bracket at that time. The deadline for purchasing your bracket is March 16 at 12:01 AM. There is no limit to the number of brackets you can buy!

No basketball expertise required! Follow the steps of the online bracket system for each purchase, and then watch the tournament and track your progress. The top three brackets will win a prize! 

100% of the proceeds from the Nadiv Bracket Challenge will go to the UJFT Annual Campaign and the Nadiv Men’s Giving Circle to benefit our Jewish community in Tidewater and throughout the world.

Charlene Aminoff's life changed in an instant when her 2 year old daughter drowned in a pool — only to be miraculously brought back to life. She's dedicated her life to sharing the experience, and more.

PURIM THEMED SUNDAY FUN DAY + OPERATION HAMANTASCHEN

MARCH 5,  1:00 - 4:00 PM  •  SANDLER FAMILY CAMPUS

Join PJ Library in Tidewater at the Simon Family JCC  for a Purim Celebration! Make hamantaschen cookies with friends and family — Some to take home, and some to share with our friends at Beth Sholom Village. Operation Hamantaschen will have 3 time slots available (1 PM, 2PM and 3 PM), each lasting an hour.

While waiting for the cookies to bake and cool, join PJ Library in Tidewater, Camp JCC and representatives from regional Jewish sleep away camps (Capital Camps) in The Zone and MPR for a special Purim themed Sunday Fun Day. There will be Purim tunes, games and activities, crafts and more! 

Everyone is encouraged to come in costume and teens ages 13 and up can sign up to help with the event and earn community service hours.  Spots are FREE but LIMITED for Operation Hamantaschen, so be sure to register today.  JewishVA.org/OH

 

ART EDUCATION: JEWISH ROOTS OF MODERN AMERICAN STAR-CHITECTS   

MARCH 6, 12:00 PM • SANDLER FAMILY CAMPUS

This Jewish Arts Education presentation highlights the background and work of nine Jewish architects who have designed well-known buildings within the United States and around the world. They include Richard Neutra, Victor Gruen, Louis Kahn, Max Abramovitz, Eero Saarinen, Frank Gehry, Denise Scott Brown, Moshe Safdie, and Daniel Libeskind.

This class will be taught by Rick Rivin, a graduate of Harvard College and the Harvard Graduate School of Design, where he obtained a Master’s Degree in Architecture. As the vice president of a project and construction management firm in Chesapeake, Rivin provided expert opinions regarding building envelope performance problems and the investigation and remediation of dysfunctional buildings. After a 40+ year professional career, he remains a member emeritus of the American Institute of Architects (AIA).

An American Friendship: Horace Kallen, Alain Locke, and the Development of Cultural Pluralism

Old Dominion University's Institute for Jewish Studies and Interfaith Understanding, in partnership with the United Jewish Federation of Tidewater, present this one-time conversation and educational experience. 

Dr. David Weinfeld from Rowan University will lead a discussion about his book, An American Friendship, over Zoom. All are welcome to join the call.
