Jewish Community Relations Council of the United Jewish Federation of Tidewater Condemns Recent Tweets by Norfolk Candidate

Virginia Beach, VA
September 19, 2021

Jewish Community Relations Council of the United Jewish Federation of Tidewater (JCRC) condemns tweets made by Hahns Copeland, Norfolk candidate for Virginia House of Delegates 89th District which, whether unintentional or not, reinforce a longstanding antisemitic trope and degrading language toward women.

At a time when antisemitism and division are already at record high levels, we cannot allow hatred to be fanned or for antisemitism to become a pawn in a political game. We call on all candidates to refrain from using stereotypes and hate language in their campaigns and instead be part of our Commonwealth’s efforts to build a better Virginia that is inclusive of all its residents. We are grateful for the voices of shock and disdain from elected officials, other candidates, and the community.

We encourage the candidate, his staff, and the public to learn more about this topic on Friday, September 24 at noon via Zoom for a conversation with the ADL, ‘Antisemitism: How Did We Get Here?’.  FREE and open to the community, pre-registration is required.
