To Life was originally published in 2002 to introduce the stories of Holocaust survivors who made their home in Hampton Roads. These were remembrances of European Jews who were living ordinary lives when Nazis stole their humanity by placing stars on their chest and then sometimes permanent numbers on their arms, while they awaited fates sometimes worse than death.
The 20th-anniversary edition of To Life: The Past is Present Holocaust Stories of Hampton Roads Survivors, Liberators, and Rescuers includes the recollections of rescuers who faced grave danger, even possible death, to fight the hideous crimes perpetrated by Hitler against Jews.
Stories previously untold and historical notes have been added to To Life: The Past is Present, and refreshes the existing stories sacrificing their integrity, to better contextualize each one and make this volume accessible to readers of all ages.
To Life: The Past Is Present, memorializes real and very special people whose individual accounts, each unique, bear witness to a common evil. This well-organized edition makes these heroic stories more accessible. These stories will be an inspiration to the next generation and a permanent repudiation to would be deniers. ~Dr. Carroll Starling, Retired U.S Navy Chaplain, former high school history educator, and University Professor of Education, Old Dominion University
The local profiles featured in this book represent both a gift and a responsibility. Holocaust survivors, liberators, and rescuers in Hampton Roads have generously shared their stories to help future generations understand their struggle and survival. We, the readers, have an obligation to apply and share what we learn from their powerful experiences. In doing so, we honor the longstanding principle of "Never Again" as we proclaim "L'Chaim (To Life)! ~ Jonathan Zur, President & CEO, Virginia Center for Inclusive Communities
