“Derech eretz kadma l’Torah” - good character precedes the Torah, is a well-known Jewish proverb that was first written by the Sages in the Midrash (Vayikra Rabbah 9:3). Acting with dignity and respect are prerequisites to studying the Torah and fulfilling its commandments. It is for this reason that many communities have the custom of studying the Ethics of the Fathers in the weeks following Passover, leading up to Shavuot, the anniversary of the receiving of the Torah.
Since the Torah cannot be fulfilled unless one has good character, the appropriate preparation for receiving the Torah is to study the text that our sages designed as a guide for character development.
This 4-week course is offered in partnership with the Norfolk Kollel and will be taught by Rabbi Avi Farkas. In-person and online learning options available.
Rabbi Farkas is currently studying Jewish law and philosophy at Norfolk Kollel's Institution for Higher Jewish Education. In his spare time, Rabbi Farkas can be found biking, swimming, fishing, kayaking, and virtually anything else that involves the outdoors and nature. Rabbi Farkas still misses the outdoor ice skating of his hometown Toronto, but will gladly take the warm Tidewater weather over the frigid North. Rabbi Farkas also studied in Israel for seven years at Yeshivas Kodshim under Rabbi Tzvi Kaplan, a world-renowned expert in Talmudic analysis. Rabbi Farkas's classes can be found on all popular podcasting platforms.
